The Mount Vernon Police Department

The Mount Vernon Police Department is responsible for arresting offenders, investigating crimes, responding to calls for service,  helping prevent crime, patrolling neighborhoods and working closely with the community to identify and solve neighborhood problems. The department also offers a variety of educational and outreach programs to assist the citizens and businesses in the community, some of the programs include Block Watch, Citizens Academy, Preparatory Academy ,T.E.A.M. and Vacation Home Check . The department’s goal is to make the City of Mount Vernon a safe place in which to live, learn, work, and visit. The department is made up of four divisions which include Administrative Services, Crime Prevention ,Criminal Investigations Divisions and Patrol Operations.

The Mount Vernon Police Department  is headed by Jerry L. Dodd who is the current Chief of Police. Ranks in the police department are as follows: Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Detective and finally police officer.
